N Nam NAME THESE TUGS

Pilots and Tugs: A Timeless Relationship Presentation to the 2013 BC Tugboat Industry Conference Captain Fred Denning, Vice-President, BC Coast Pilots Vice-President, Pacific, CMPA

“Our industry has come to a place where tug designs will ultimately respond to the safety requirements and standards required by developments and regulators.”

“Tug operators and pilots work together through development of new or updated operating standards and procedures, often leading to guidelines or regulations, and in new project development.”

Pilots have come from all sectors of the industry but “many marine pilots worked in the tug boat fleet at some point. This connection lends itself to a strong working relationship on the water every day.”

“Marine pilots and tug skippers have a long history of working collaboratively throughout their careers. “

“Overall, pilots have a good relationship with all tug companies along the coast and we value those relationships.”

“Pilots place a huge amount of trust in tug skippers.”

“Training for pilots along with tug skippers is now a required part of Apprentice Pilot training and is becoming a part Pilot ongoing education and training.”

“Local tug companies have been very forthcoming in providing the equipment required to maintain a safe and vibrant shipping industry on the BC coast.”

“The lessons learned from tanker escort studies done for Second Narrows and Haro Straits\Boundary Pass will be of great value as work carries on with regard to the development of the many energy projects currently being looked at on the North Coast.”
