Young Adult Literature Targeted toward teenagers Most characters are high school age Many are issue novels: teen pregnancy, drug use, homosexuality, dating violence, abuse, rebellion, etc. Profanity is common.

So Why YA in Middle School? High appeal to students – they ask for them by title! Students relate to the books Many have very positive, very hopeful messages that speak directly to their lives From a formerly nonreader student: “This book changed my life.”
