Students in Middle School Grades 5 – 8, ages Wide range of social/emotional/physical/ academic development Wide range of interests and ability Enjoy books with high school characters Girls, especially, tend to enjoy “issue” books
Young Adult Literature Targeted toward teenagers Most characters are high school age Many are issue novels: teen pregnancy, drug use, homosexuality, dating violence, abuse, rebellion, etc. Profanity is common.
So Why YA in Middle School? High appeal to students – they ask for them by title! Students relate to the books Many have very positive, very hopeful messages that speak directly to their lives From a formerly nonreader student: “This book changed my life.”
