Sun Prairie High School Physical Education GRADING POLICY

Blue Cards/PE Locks These cards hold your information for the semester in case you forget your combination. Locks cost $6.00 if lost during the semester Make sure your lock is actually locked if you don’t want it to turn up missing.

Locker Room Please put your lock on a SMALL locker. Record the locker number onto your blue card that you place your lock on. Tall lockers are for your use DURING class and after school only. Your belongings will be removed if kept in a tall locker outside of your class period. Copy down the serial number and combination from the OLD blue card onto the blue card you just filled out.

It is understood that effort, determination, perseverance, and other intangible qualities will influence a student’s improvement and performance. Chronic unexcused absences from class, tardiness, refusal to participate, not being properly dressed for an activity, and behavior disruptive to the learning climate may be reasons for failure.

GENERAL CONDUCT Respect teachers, classmates, school property, equipment, and facilities. No profanity or swearing will be tolerated in PE. Consequences will follow. Students must stay in designated area until bell rings. (Directly outside locker rooms; not in the gym, hallway, or by the weight room.) No gum, candy, food or drink in the Physical Education areas. No hats, I-pods, CD players, or cell phones allowed in class. If found, we will take them.

DRESS REQUIREMENTS Athletic shorts, T-shirts, socks and gym shoes. No clothes worn in school should be worn in P.E. class. Clothes should be taken home regularly and washed. Appropriate clothing –no tobacco, beer, or sexual advertising. No jewelry should be worn.

COLD WEATHER DAYS - Wind breakers, sweat pants, and a sweatshirt are recommended. - All classes will be outside during cold weather months. BE PREPARED!!

NO DRESS POLICY: If you forget to bring proper clothing/ shoes for class the following will apply: First NO Dress: Loss of daily participation points / Option to make up points allowed. Second NO Dress: Loss of daily participation points / No make-up allowed

ATTENDANCE (20%) ABSENCES : Each student will lose a total of 2 points for each absence during the unit. (TOTAL 20 points/unit). Excused absences can be made up within two weeks of the absence. Unexcused Absence - Students will lose a total of 2 points and will not have the option to make-up. Medical Excuses: All medical excuses will be handled on an individual basis. One day excuse: A note from home may be brought to the teacher, but that will be left to the discretion of the instructor as to whether participation will be required. Any days beyond one will require a medical excuse.

MAKE-UP POLICY To earn make-up points for Medical Excuses or Excused Absences from class students can choose from the following opportunities: Student can participate in a 30-minute weight lifting activity after school. Student must present a make-up slip to the weight room supervisor to sign approving the make-up. The student is responsible for returning the make-up form to his/her teacher for record. Student can participate in another class to make-up the absence. Again, the student must present a make-up slip to the class supervisor to sign approving the make-up. The student is responsible for returning the make-up form to his/her teacher for record.

PARTICIPATION: (40%) A maximum of 4 points will be earned each class period if a student.... Participates to the best level of his/her ability Shows good sportsmanship Follows directions and class rules Listens Treats equipment with care in the proper manner

PARTICIPATION Cont… A maximum of 3 points will be earned each class period if a student.... Performs all characteristics listed in 4 point criteria, but participation is not to students’ potential. A maximum of 2 points will be earned each class period if a student.... Participates at a very minimal level, but still follows classroom rules and shows good sportsmanship. 0 points will be earned in each class if a student... Has an unexcused absence Refuses to participate Destroys school property/equipment Shows poor sportsmanship

WRITTEN EXAMS: (30%) Each unit will end with a written exam consisting of 30 questions. Questions will cover the history, basic rules, terminology, scoring and etiquette for each unit.

SKILL EVALUATION: (10%) Assessment techniques come in many forms in physical education setting: the student portfolio, biofeedback (checking heart rates and output), a recognition of one owns performance among peers, a measure against statistical norms, and objective assessment based on performance rubrics. Students will be evaluated on two skills in each unit each worth 5 points.
