ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: The main goal of this lesson is for students to obtain an understanding of prairies and their habitats. Students should also learn where praires can be located. Objectives: Students will be learning what prairies are. Students will be learning important habitat that thrive on prairie land. Students will be learning some important geographical locations of prairie land. Students will be learning ways they can help save prairies and their habitat from becoming endangered.

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: It is important for students to learn about prairies because they have a large role in our geographical system. Students should also learn about the dangers of prairies becoming extinct so they can play a part in helping stop prairies from becoming extinct. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards STATE GOAL 17: Understand world geography and the effects of geography on society, with an emphasis on the United States. A. Locate, describe and explain places, regions and features on the Earth. 17.A.2a Compare the physical character-istics of places including soils, land forms, vegetation, wildlife, climate, natural hazards. 17.A.2b Use maps and other geographic representations and instruments to gather information about people, places and environments. C. Understand relationships between geographic factors and society. 17.C.2c Explain how human activity affects the environment. National – NCSS Themes The study of people, places, and environments enables us to understand the relationship between human populations and the physical world. During their studies, learners develop an understanding of spatial perspectives, and examine changes in the relationship between peoples, places and environments.

Logical/Mathematical

Logical/Mathematical Activity Students will be looking at the following pictures of a prairie. They will use these pictures to learn about prairies. The whole class will be going over the following questions to help familiarize themselves with prairies. 1.What are prairies and what do they look like? 2.What are the names of some animals that you can typically find in a prairie? Resources/materials needed:

Verbal/Linguistic

Verbal/Linguistic Activity: Students will first watch this youtube video about prairies. After they are done watching the film they will get into groups of 3-4 to discuss what knew things they learned about prairies. After their discussion each student will write down the names of two to three states that contain prairie land. Resources/materials needed:

Musical/Rhythmic

Musical/Rhythmic Activity: Students will be listening to the nature sounds as they watch the slide show on Prairie habitat. After they are done they will be choosing one plant, animal, bird, etc. and doing research on it. They will be creating a poster with pictures, important facts and the below questions. 1.Where is their plant, bird, animal, etc. most commonly located? 2.What do they eat or how do they grow? 3.What state is the plant, bird, animal, etc. usually found on? Visual/Spatial

Visual/Spatial Activity: Students will be learning about place prairie land can be located at. They will be have a blank map of the united states. As they learn about the different locations prairie land is located they will color it in with a crayon. Each state should be a different color. Body/Kinesthetic

Body/Kinesthetic Activity: Students will be planting some prairie grass in a clay pot. They will begin by learning about some grasses that typically grow on a prairie. After they are done researching they will fill a clay pot full of soil. They will then sprinkle grass seeds on top of the soil. They will conclude by watering their grass. Students will be either leaving the pots in the classroom to grow or taking them home. If the students take their pots home, they will needs to bring them back to class in a week for class observation and journaling. After a week the students will write in their journal what they have learned about prairie grass. They will include how their own grass grew and how easy or hard it was to plant it. Resources/materials needed: Clay pots Grass seed Soil

Interpersonal

Interpersonal Activity: Students will be working in groups of 2-3 to create a poster about prairies. Included on their posters should be pictures, facts, and eye catching decorations and colors. The posters will be posted around school to teach other students about prairies. The posters will need to be informational so that the viewer feels like they have learned something new after reading and looking at the poster. Intrapersonal

Intrapersonal Activity Students will be watching this youtube video on how prairie land is becoming threatened. After they are done watching the video students will be writing a paper on why people should stop destroying prairie land. They be including in their papers some of the most important geographical locations prairies are located and ways people can help save prairies. The papers will be put up on the hallway walls so that other students can read them and become involved in helping save prairies. Resources/materials needed.

Naturalistic

Naturalistic Activity: Students will begin by using the below site to first do research on prairies. After they have completed reading the site they will be planting and growing their own prairies. At each step they will have to do research and learn about which plant would grow best at which prairie location. Using this site students will be learning about the multiple different prairie locations along with what plants are usually found growing in each location. Resources/materials needed:

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Visual Learning and Assessment: Visual Learning, Assessment, and Online Resources: Students will be assessed by the work they turn in to be graded. They will also be assessed with the amount of information they include in their factual posters. The teacher will also assess the students by walking around the classroom and watching them while they work. The teacher will listen to students group discussions. The teacher will ask multiple questions and will ask students to explain their answers if they are incorrect rather than just calling on another student. Online Resources:
