 Zoology(Animal Life)  Botany(Plant Life)  Geography(Physical landscape/habitat)  Meteorology(Weather) & Human influence

 Grasslands: Temperate grasslands are composed of a mix of grasses and forbs and underlain by some of the world's most fertile soils. Since the development of the steel plow most have been converted to agricultural lands.  There are different regions of the world that have temperate grasslands.

 Annuals- plants with a one year life cycle.  Browser- an animal that prefers to eat tender shoots, twigs, and shrubs or leaves.  Fodder- coarse, dry food, such as hay.  Grazer- an animal adapted to eating grasses.  Composting- the decay or break down of organic matter.

 The g rasslands in Africa don’t have many trees or bushes to hide many animals. Because of the open landscape and the spaced trees, grasslands are home to large herds of mammals such as the zebra and bison. Animals such as lions or jaguars are the main predators in these grasslands.  Prairie grasslands contain animals like foxes or wolves, prairie dogs, birds, and snakes.

Q: Animals that live in grasslands are more active during when? A: The rainy season Q: When settlers moved to North America they discovered that there was ______ species of birds and _______ species of animals. A: 300 birds and 80 animals.

 Prairies are famous for their beautiful flowers and grasses. Plants in this grassland includes Big Bluestem, Broom Sedge, Switchgrass, Indian Grass, Prarie Cord Grass, and Sand Dropseed. Q: How much of land is grassland? A: One quarter Q: What is the tallest plant that lives in the prairie? A: The big Bluestem grass.

 Prairies are maintained by fire and grassing animals.  Only few spots of wild prairie remain.  Grasslands are known as the bread basket of the world. Q: What is grasslands soil usually called? A: Mollisols. Q: Grasslands have been destroyed because of what? A: Farming.

 Average rainfall is from inches.  In tropical and sub tropical grassland the average is inches.  Temperature of the temperate grassland’s average is 34 degrees.  Tropical grassland’s temperature is around 70 degrees in the winter and 90 in the summer. Q: What is the usual climate of the grassland? A: Warm, rainy summers and Frosty winters. Q: What is the weather most like in grasslands? A: Weather is mostly hot and dry.
