VOICE AND DICTION

HOW IS THE VOICE PRODUCED HOW IS THE VOICE PRODUCED? WHAT IS NECESSARY FOR CORRECT SPEECH AND VOICE PRODUCTION? IT IS PRODUCED BY THE AIR FROM THE LUNGS PASSING OVER THE VOCAL CHORDS. THINGS THAT ARE NECESSARY FOR CORRECT SPEECH AND VOICE ARE BODILY RELAXATION, PROPER BREATHING, AND GOOD POSTURE. 2. WHAT THINGS CAN EFFECT YOUR VOICE NEGATIVELY? ILLNESS, TIRED, WORRY, ANGRY, NERVOUS, HURRIED, TENSION, SLEEPLESSNESS, CAFFEINE(CHOCOLATE, COFFEE), MILK, AND SODA POP!

3. LOCATE THE VOCAL CHORDS ON SLIDE ONE: WHAT ARE THE VOCAL CHORDS MADE OF? THE VOCAL CHORDS ARE HOUSED IN THE ADAMS APPLE AREA AND THEY ARE MUSCLES! THAT IS WHY THEY CAN BE STRENGTHENED AND ABUSED JUST LIKE OTHER MUSCLES IN THE BODY. WHAT IS CONTROLLED BREATHING? A VERY BRIEF INHALATION THROUGH THE MOUTH AND A SLOW CONTROLLED EXHALATION PERIOD 5. WHAT ARE THE RESONATORS AND ARTICULATORS AND HOW DO THEY AID YOUR ABILITY TO SPEAK ON STAGE? THE RESONATORS – THROAT, HEAD , NOSE AND MOUTH, THESE ARE USED TO CREATE RICHNESS TO THE SOUND OF THE VOICE! THE ARTICULATORS – LIPS, TONGUE, LOWER JAW, TEETH THESE ARE USED TO INCREASE ARTICULATION WHICH ALLOWS YOU TO SPEAK CRISPLY AND CLEANLY.

6. THE HUMAN VOICE HAS 4 QUALITIES: THEY ARE: A. QUALITY – THE INDIVIDUAL SOUND OF YOUR VOICE B. PITCH – THE HIGH OR LOWNESS OF YOUR VOICE INFLECTION – IS WHEN YOU GRADUALLY RAISE OR LOWER THE PITCH II. MONOTONE – SPEAKING ONLY ON ONE LEVEL C. VOLUME – THE STRENGTH OR FORCE OF YOUR VOICE = D. RATE – THE SPEED WITH WHICH YOU SPEAK I. RAPID DELIVERY – SPEED CREATES A FEELING OF TENSION OR EXCITEMENT II. SLOWER DELIVERY – IMPORTANT PASSAGES, SIGNIFICANCE, CALM, SERENE, TRAGIC OR AWESOME.

7. HOW DO YOU PROPERLY USE A PAUSE IN THOUGHT GROUP OR MONOLOGUE? A BIT TRICKY: YOU ALWAYS USE PUNCTUATION TO GIVE YOU A THOUGH GROUP AND THEY ALWAYS COME AT THE END OF SPOKEN THOUGHT GROUP. “A PAUSE IS THE SILENCE WHICH IS OFTEN MORE AFFECTIVE THAN WORDS” GOOD ACTORS/ACTRESSES KNOW HOW TO USE TONE – HOW DO YOU PLACE TONE SO IT CAN BE USED EFEECTIVELY TWO SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT: ALWAYS USE THE MASK OF THE FACE TO PLACE TONE AND SECONDLY THROW THE VOICE AS FAR AS IS NEEDED FOR THE LISTENER TO HEAR. BREATHING DEEPLY, OPENING THE MOUTH, AND FOCUSING THE SOUND ON THE PEOPLE FARTHEST AWAY.

WHAT IS NASALITY? NASALITY HAPPENS WHEN THE VOWEL SOUNDS(A, E , I , O , U) THAT SHOULD BE DELIVERED THROUGH THE THROAT ARE PUSHED UP INTO THE NASAL CAVITY. THIS LEAVES THE VOICE SOUNDING FLAT! 10. HOW DO WE USE THE VOICE FOR EMPHASIS? DELIVER WITH GREATER FORCE! HOLDING THE SOUND OR WORD LONGER BY LIFTING AND LOWERING THEM IN PITCH SO THEY HAVE A VARIETY OF PITCHES D. USING STRONG CONSONANTS THAT HAVE CRISP BEGINNINGS AND FINISHES. 11. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SWALLOW YOUR WORDS? GARBLED SPEECH – CAUSED BY TENSION.
