 Age stratification : Unequal distribution of wealth, power, and prestige is based on age.  Ageism : Beliefs, attitudes, and norms used to justify prejudice and discrimination.  Functionalism: Elderly are treated according to what their role is in society. - In industrial societies the status of the elderly has dropped. - Linked to higher suicide rates.

 Elderly compete with other ages for resources.  Industrial society replaces older workers with younger ones.  LCHS – Forced retirements?
