Cyberbullying By Andrew Hodges, Randy Guzman, Ryan Hammett, and Michael O'Neill

What is Cyberbullying? It is using technology, like cell phones and the Internet, to bully or harass another person.

Types of Cyberbullying 1.Sending mean messages or threats to a person's account or cell phone 2.Posting hurtful or threatening messages on social networking sites or web pages

3.Spreading rumors online or through texts 4.Taking unflattering pictures of a person and spreading them through cell phones or the Internet

5.Stealing a person's account information to break into their account and send damaging messages 6.Pretending to be someone else online to hurt another person

7.Sexting, or circulating sexually suggestive pictures or messages about a person

Real World Examples On October 16, 2006, a 13- year-old girl named Megan Meier hung herself due to cyber bullying

She became friends with a "16- year-old boy" named Josh Evans on MySpace Josh was really a mother of Megan's former friend

They were originally friends, but on October 15, 2006 Josh tells Josh was really a mother of Megan's former friend

Josh sent messages saying "Megan is a slut" and "Megan is fat" She hung herself in her closet the next day

Megan had a history of depression and was on medication at the time of her death She suffered from low self- esteem

This example of cyber bullying was done through anger to supposedly avenge her daughter This is an extreme example of cyber bullying

Ethical Questions o Is cyber bullying a 13-year-old really worth the revenge? o Is cyber bullying ever justified?

Statistics Over half of teens and adolescents have cyber bullied and have been cyber bullied online

Over half of adolescents and teens do not tell their parents when they are cyber bullied 10-20% of people experience cyber bullying regularly

1 in 10 adolescents or teens have had embarrassing or damaging pictures taken of themselves without permission cyber bullying is even spread between genders

Victims are more likely to have low self-esteem and sometimes consider suicide Cyber bullying happens to all races

What does the church say about cyberbullying? The catholic church is no stranger to bullying But due to the recent addition of technology bullying has got worse

There are many verses in the bible that talk about bullying. some of those are: Leviticus 19:18; Matthew 5:11 and Revelation 22:12

Leviticus 19:18 "You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord."

Matthew 5:11 "Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account."

Revelation 22:12 "Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done."

Although there truly isn't anything in the bible that talks about cyberbullying these verses prove relevant.

If these verses are applied to cyberbullying they serve the same purpose which is helping to better ones self

Church's views on cyberbullying Recalling the comandments it states one should not bear false witness against his neighbour

If one shouldn't do this the church would look down upon cyberbullying

Negative Effects of Cyber Bullying How can cyber bullying affect people???

Negative Effects of Cyber Bullying Lowers self-esteem Cyber bullying affects people for the rest of their lives

Negative Effects of Cyber Bullying Cyber bullying could be caused by race, religion, or social level

Negative Effects of Cyber Bullying Could cause more stress than there already is at home and school

Negative Effects of Cyber Bullying Could cause someone to hate their family and friends and run away from home

Negative Effects of Cyber Bullying Could cause thoughts of suicide It could come back and effect you!!!

Negative Effects of Cyber Bullying The person being bullied isn’t the only one that is affected Cyber bullying also affects the bully

Negative Effects of Cyber Bullying Once the bully comes to a realization of the terrible things he’s done, those scars stick with him/her for the rest of his/her life

Differences Between Cyberbullying and Conventional Bullying Cyberbullying can be much less noticeable than "schoolyard" bullying, but at the same time it leaves evidence

Differences -The virtual disconnect makes it easier for motives and results to be different -Someone could think they are acting normal while their counterpart feels victimized advice/Cyberbullying/How-is-cyberbullying- different-to-other-forms-of-bullying.aspx

Differences -cyberbullying seems less important because it is “just talking” and seemingly unrelated to physical harm -it actually has more dangerous effects such as suicide advice/Cyberbullying/How-is-cyberbullying- different-to-other-forms-of-bullying.aspx

Differences -cyberbullying is often retaliatory and the revenge is taken too far since it is unobserved -cyberbullying makes revenge more immediate advice/Cyberbullying/How-is-cyberbullying- different-to-other-forms-of-bullying.aspx

Differences -the people getting bullied and committing the bullying can be anyone -children can be more embarrassed to talk about it cyberbullying-different-to-other-forms-of-bullying.aspx

Differences -cyberbullying can take place 24/7 -it invades personal space (hard to escape) -more likely for incidents to be unintentional cyberbullying-different-to-other-forms-of-bullying.aspx

Differences -often happens accidentally through trash talk (in s, and online, trash talk is perceived as more serious than in person) cyberbullying-different-to-other-forms-of-bullying.aspx

Differences -Many people do not filter what they say online, and it can be taken too seriously -They might not mean to be negative, but their word choice can skew their message ully.html

Cyber bully people and get knocked out!
