1 Diversity of Life Properties of Life What are the six properties of life?

22 Maryland Science Content Standard Students will be able to provide examples and explain that organisms sorted into groups share similarities in external structures as well as similarities in internal anatomical structures and processes which can be used to infer the degree of relatedness among organisms

3 Objective: Students will be able to identify characteristics all living things have in common. Students will be able to describe the life functions carried out by all living things.

4 Today Students Will… Review what all living things have in common Explain the characteristics of living things by taking notes on the properties of life Explore the properties of life by completing a Cyber Ed activity Extend their knowledge of this topic by designing their own creature showing the properties of life

5 Review What do all living things have in common?

6 Properties of Life Remember OGRRE!! rganization: 1. Cellular Organization- made of cells 2. Similar Chemicals- water, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids row and Develop espond to Surroundings eproduction nergy Use

7 Properties of Life Notes Using pages 6-9 in the From Bacteria to Plants text book, complete the notes page on the properties of life. From Bacteria to Plants notes page on the properties of life –Write a definition or description from the textbook. –Put that definition in your own words and include an example. We will do the first one together.

8 Cyber Ed Open the Cyber Ed folder on your desktop. –Open the Cyber Ed icon Click “Cells-The Basis of Life” –Click “What is Life?” »Click “Application”

9 Create Your Own Creature Your creature must carry on all six of the properties of life. You will work on your rough draft in class today. Explain how you know your creature is made of cells, has similar chemicals, and grows and develops (#1-3 on creature rough draft sheet).(#1-3 on creature rough draft sheet).

10 Conclusion: How do you know if something is alive?
