Time 3 rd Grade SOL 3.15

Description of Project  This third grade AFL project was developed for writing time to the nearest minute and five minute intervals using analog and digital clocks. Formal and informal assessments used to implement and evaluate this instructional unit will include manipulatives such as clocks, time dice, and clock face cards. These manipulatives will be used in cooperative groups.

Vocabulary  Analog  Digital  Hour hand  Minute hand  Thirty  Half past  Quarter hour  Half hour  Equivalent  Hour  O’clock  A.M.  P.M.  Noon  Midnight  Face  Seconds  Minutes

Introduction  Over the winter holiday, students will be given a telling time jumpstart opportunity.  Students will be encouraged to practice sample 3 rd grade SOL questions and review time-telling SOLs from 2 nd grade.  Each student will bring home a small clock to use as a manipulative.

Introduction Students and parents will receive a letter and a small clock explaining SOL 3.15, telling time.

Introduction  On the back of the parent letter, examples of 3 rd grade SOL questions will be available for students to practice with their parents.

Pre-Assessment  Students will be given a pre- assessment prior to the winter holiday.  The results of the pre-assessment will determine the students’ prior knowledge of time.  The teacher will use the results to plan appropriate differentiation instruction.

Pre- Assessment

Clock Face Cards  Students will draw the hour and minute hands of a given time on a prestamped card with a blank clock face.  Remediation will be given in small groups for students not mastering the skill.

Time Dice  Students in small groups will roll time dice (1 die hour, 1 die minutes in digital form).  Then, students will write the time shown on the dice on paper.

Time Dice  Next, a “timemaster” will check the answers of the group for accuracy.  Students will repeat with an option to rotate the timemaster.

Time BINGO  Assessing students’ ability to match the digital time to the corresponding analog time.  Times will be called to the hour, half hour, quarter hour, five minute interval, and minute.

Clock Face Practice  Students will create the hour and minute hands to match each time.  Students who do not master the skill will be given mini clocks to work in small groups with resource teachers/ instructional aide.
