Old Testament Reading Joshua 1:6-9 (KJV) 6.Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. 7.Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest. 8.This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. 9.Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee withersoever thou goest.

Responsive Reading Psalm 56:1-4,10-12 (KJV) Leader: Be merciful unto me, O God: People: For man would swallow me up; he fighting daily oppresses me. Leader: Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: People: For they be many that fight against me, O thou most high. Leader: What time I am afraid, People: I will trust in thee. Leader: In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; People: I will not fear what flesh can do unto me. Leader: In God will I praise his word: People: In the LORD will I praise his word. Leader: In God have I put my trust: People: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me. Leader: Thy vows are upon me, O God: People: I will render praises unto thee.

New Testament Reading Matthew 10:25-31 (KJV) 25.It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household? 26.Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known. 27.What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops. 28.And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29.Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? And one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30.But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31.Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. Song Sparrow

How to Live as Christians Without Fear

How to Live As Christians Without Fear Many Scriptures in the Bible talk about fear Angels often appear and say “fear not” to people throughout the Bible We are commanded not to fear How do you handle fear of various types?

What are various fears we have? Fear of not having things we need Fear of not having food, clothes and necessities Fear of not having enough money Fear of failure Fear of others Fear for the well-being of our families/friends Fear of the unknown (xenophobia) Fear of death Fear of God Fear of not following or missing God’s will for our lives What are other fears that we have?

What is the result of fear? Fear produces stress Fear breeds more fear Fear paralyzes us Fear causes a “fight or flight” reaction Reactions to fears can be even worse that than fear “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s first inaugural address, 1933

What Is the meaning of “fear” and “afraid” in the Bible Hebrew – “yare” pronounced “yah-ray” To fear, be afraid; translated fear and afraid in the Old Testament, but also means to reverence, feel awe for, honour and respect, such as for God Greek – “phobeo” pronounced “foh-beh-oh” To put to flight, to flee, to fear, to be afraid, to be seized with alarm or struck with amazement, but also means to reverence, venerate, to treat with deference or reverential obedience In both languages, the words afraid and fear reference the same Hebrew and/or Greek word

When does fear appear in the Old Testament? First appearance of fear in the Bible - When Adam was afraid and knew that he was naked, but more importantly, he realized that he had sinned and that God was looking for him Other appearances in the Old Testament - Sarah was afraid when confronted by God about bearing a child in her old age - Moses was afraid to look at God in the burning bush - Fear of Joseph’s brothers in Egypt - Joshua says not to be afraid of the Canaanites - Daniel was afraid of one of his dreams - The men around Jonah were afraid of the storm

When does fear appear in the New Testament? First appearance of fear in the New Testament - When the Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream saying “Fear not” to take Mary as his wife who had conceived by the Holy Ghost Other references to fear and afraid in the New Testament - Disciples were afraid when Jesus walked on water, thinking it was a spirit - The scribes and Pharisees were afraid of the amazement of the people at the doctrine of Jesus - Pontius Pilate was afraid of the people - The centurion at the cross was afraid at the earthquake and other events - Herod was afraid of John the Baptist

What does the Bible command concerning fear? Fear not - God is sovereign and in control (Luke 12:32) Fret not (Proverbs 24:19) Faint not (2 Corinthians 4:16) We are to trust God in all things and for all things: “For my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19, KJV) We can do all things through Christ “For I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13, KJV)

Two Sides of Fear Negative fear – being afraid, timid, paralyzed or alarmed with a negative reaction to events and/or things Positive fear – to reverence, worship, and have awe for God

What should we not fear according to the Scriptures? DO NOT FEAR the following things: - People who serve Satan (Matt. 10:25-26) - People who can kill us and kill the body but not the soul (Matt. 10:28) - Enemies of God (Deut. 7:18) - Evildoers – fret not is the command given (Psa. 37:1,7; Prov. 24:19) - Supernatural events demonstrating power of God such as at the Transfiguration of Christ (Matt. 17:5-8) and in multiple appearances of angels and God throughout the Bible; we should “fear” and reverence God and God only at all times

What can we do about fear in our daily lives? Replace a negative fear of people and things with a reverence and awe of God When confronted with fear, remember the verse “What time I am afraid, I will TRUST in Thee.”

When confronted with fear, remember some of the names of God, including: - “El-Shaddai” which means Almighty God or “God All Sufficient” - “Jehovah-Jireh” which means “The Lord will provide” and also “the Lord will foresee” as a prophet (Gen. 22:14) - “Jehovah-Shammah” which means “The Lord is there” (Ezek. 48:35) - “Jehovah-Shalom” which means “The Lord is our peace” meaning wholeness, fulfillment (Judges 6:23) What can we do about fear in our daily lives?

What is an important key to dealing with fear in our lives? An important key to overcoming fear is LOVE! - “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out all fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love – 1 John 4:18 (KJV) - “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (can be translated self-control, clear thinking, good judgment, discipline) – 2 Tim. 1:7 (KJV) We must operate in perfect love – loving God and others, and not being afraid of people with no real power but only being in awe of God who created the universe!
