JOSHUA: A MAN FILLED WITH FEAR

I. NO FEAR YOUNG INEXPERIENCED BRAVE FOOLISH

NO FEAR NO FEAR OF THE AMALAKITES EXODUS 17:16 NO FEAR OF THE MOUNTAIN EXODUS 24:13 NO FEAR OF THE CANAANITES Num. 14:7-10

II. WHY BE AFRAID - NOW?

A. JOSHUA HAD TO FILL THE SHOES OF MOSES!! MOSES WAS THE ONE WHO CONFRONTED PHAROAH! MOSES WAS THE ONE WHO PERFORMED MIRACLES (PLAGUES OF EGYPT) MOSES WAS THE ONE WHO PARTED THE RED SEA MOSES STRUCK A ROCK AND WATER CAME FORTH

MOSES HAD A REPUTATION! “SINCE THEN, NO PROPHET HAS RISEN IN ISRAEL LIKE MOSES, WHOM THE LORD KNEW FACE TO FACE.” (Deuteronomy 34:10)

B. JOSHUA WAS FACED WITH A MILITARY CAMPAIGN HE HAD NO TRAINING HE HAD NO TRAINED ARMY HE HAD NO VETERANS THEY HAD NO WEAPONS

HOW DO WE KNOW HE WAS AFRAID? MOSES ADDRESSED JOSHUA’S FEAR “Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous…the Lord is the one who goes ahead of you and He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:7,8

HOW DO WE KNOW HE WAS AFRAID THE PEOPLE ADDRESSED JOSHUA’S FEAR “And they answered Joshua… ‘we will obey you and follow you… only be strong and courageous.” Joshua 1:18

HOW DO WE KNOW HE WAS AFRAID? GOD ADDRESSED JOSHUA’S FEAR “The Lord said to Joshua, ‘Be strong and courageous… (Joshua 1:6) “Only be strong and very courageous…(Joshua 1:7) “Be strong and courageous, do not tremble or be dismayed…” (Joshua 1:9)

III. JOSHUA’S FEARS WHAT WAS HE AFRAID OF? JOSHUA FEARED FAILURE

WHAT IS THE CURE FOR THE FEAR OF FAILURE? BE BOLD “BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS” (JOSHUA 1:6-9)

BE FULLY OBEDIENT “BE CAREFUL TO OBEY ALL THE LAW…” (JOSHUA 1:7)

STAY FOCUSED “DO NOT TURN FROM IT (THE LAW) TO THE RIGHT OR TO THE LEFT…”

WATCH WHAT YOU SAY “THIS BOOK OF THE LAW SHALL NOT DEPART FROM YOUR MOUTH….” (JOSHUA 1:8)

GUARD YOUR THOUGHTS “…YOU SHALL MEDITATE ON IT (THE LAW) DAY AND NIGHT…” (JOSHUA 1:8)

JOSHUA’S FEARS WHAT WAS HE AFRAID OF? JOSHUA FEARED REJECTION AND LONELINESS

“WE WILL OBEY YOU…” WE WILL FOLLOW YOU…” “AS WE WERE WITH MOSES, WE WILL BE WITH YOU…” “WE WILL DEAL WITH THOSE WHO DON’T FOLLOW YOU…” (JOSHUA 1:16-18)

WHAT IS THE CURE FOR REJECTION AND LONELINESS GOD SAID TO JOSHUA: “I WILL BE WITH YOU…” Deut. 31:23 “I WILL BE WITH YOU. I WILL NOT FAIL YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU…” Joshua 1:5 “THE LORD YOUR GOD IS WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO…” Joshua 1:9
