MADAME SCHACHTER From quiet to deadly screams? What would you do if you were separated from your family?

MADAME’S ‘BEFORE’ CHARACTERIZATION Quiet when she is deported in the same train car as Elie. “A quiet women with tense, burning eyes.” (p.22)

MADAME’S ‘BEFORE’ CHARACTERIZATION Was a family friend. “She had often been to our house” (p.22)

MADAME’S ‘AFTER’ CHARACTERIZATION Began to go crazy on the train ride. “She had already begun to moan and to keep asking why she had been separated from her family” (p.22)
