Murder Mystery Lab Day 2 Bloodtyping
Blood Typing Antigens: Markers on the surface of Red Blood Cells (RBC’s) Blood type ‘A’ has marker A, blood type B has marker B, type AB has both, type O has neither
Blood Typing Plasma (liquid portion of peoples blood) contain antibodies against the markers NOT present in their blood People with type A have antibodies against B Type B have antibodies against type A Type AB have no antibodies AB can take any blood type Type O have antibodies against A and B O is universal donor
The ABO Blood System
Blood Typing When antibodies recognize the antigen they are directed against, they bind to that marker This causes “clumping.” If type A mixes with anti-A antibodies --> clump If type A mixes with anti-B antibodies --> nothing happens What happens if your blood clumps? Can’t transport oxygen --> you die!
Blood Typing Antigen (blood type) (marker on blood cell) A (AA or AO) (BB or BO) AB O Antibodies (protect blood cell) Anti B Anti A No Anti Clump No clump No
