“Smoking is murder” D Roberts

Background Information This ad was created by the Chilean Corporation Against Cancer in 2008. It was designed to inform people about the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

Appeal to Ethos The Ethological appeal of this image is ethics deal greatly with caring about people. Knowing the harmful of effects of secondhand smoke will usually influence someone to try to save a life.

Appeal to Pathos The Pathological Appeal of this image is that children being harmed or even killed appeals to everyone’s emotions. It also appeals to parents because they don’t want to imagine what it would be like to lose their own children.

Appeal to Logos The Logical appeal is that everyone knows that secondhand smoke can hurt non-smokers. This just gives them a credible source’s approval.

What effect would replacing the child with an adult have? The picture would be less effective because people respond more emotionally to an innocent child being harmed or killed than an adult.

What does the bag made of smoke signify? It signifies the harm being inflicted on a child that has no way to protect itself.
