Bullying Presentation developed by Kathy Strange- Counselor

What is a bully? 1. Pushes people around, verbally and physically. 2. Threatens others continually. 3. Has a bad temper—and often a bad mouth. Brags loudly and often about his/her strength.

What is a bully? 4. Extremely negative. Also has a very poor self-concept. As a result, becomes aggressive with other people at the first hint of trouble. A close look will reveal that this student always thinks others are trying to "put down" or take advantage of him/her. 5. Talks back. Announcing aloud what he/she plans to do. 6. Often has learning problems.

What is a bully? 7. Uses physical aggression but, generally, only outside the classroom. In the classroom, makes verbal threats about what he/she will do after leaving the classroom. 8. If articulate, may be verbally aggressive. 9. Degrades others and humiliates others in public view. 10. Generally either a loner with few friends, or a gang leader.

What is a bully? 11. Generally either a loner with few friends, or a gang leader. Those who join gangs identify with the bully in order to intimidate others. Regardless, the bully usually has a genuine reputation for being a fighter. 12. Responds to all interaction negatively and physically. 13. Looks for trouble. 14. Parents may promote fighting

How does this effect my classmates and me? 1. Many students are frightened. 2. Some think it’s funny when they experience the immature behavior of a bully. 3. A climate of fear exists in the classroom. 4. Rights of others are restrained. 5. Confrontations take place.

How does this effect my classmates and me? 6. A bad example is set. Others see problems being dealt with by violence. 7. School time is wasted. 8. Many students wish they had the nerve to act the very same way because power gives them a great deal of attention. 9. Students who are being bullied are threatened. They’re apt to become highly emotional and upset—and may be afraid to come to school.

How does this effect my classmates and me? 10. Physically weak students may follow the bully for protection—from this bully or from other bullies. 11. A bullying experience in class immediately stops the learning process. 12. negative atmosphere is created.

How can we help? 1. TELL the teacher if you are being bullied or you know of someone that is being bullied. This is NOT tatteling! 2. If your teacher does not listen, keep telling until someone hears you and helps. 3. The bully needs to know that what is being done is wrong.
