Factoring.Factoring What you’ll learn To factor trinomials of the form Vocabulary Factored form: One of two or more quantities that divides a given quantity without a remainder. For example: 2 and 3 are factors of 6; a and b are factors of ab.

Problem 1: What is the factored form of? Factors of 15Sum of factors 1 and and 58 Factoring is the process of rewriting a number or expression as a product of two or more numbers or expressions. It can be used to break a polynomial into smaller parts. By writing the factors of a polynomial, it is often easier to solve equations. The distributive property plays a big role when multiplying factors to get a product.

Your turn What is the factored form of? Answer: Factors of 24 Sum of Factors -1 and and and and b) Factors of -15 Sum of the Factors 1 and and and and 52 d)

Problem 2: The area of a rectangle is given by the trinomial. What are the dimensions of the rectangle? Use factoring Factors of -35 Sum of Factors 1 and and and and 72 The formula for the area needs to be found in you reference sheet Find the factors of

Your turn Answer: Problem 3: Factoring a trinomial with two variables. Factors of -55 Sum of Factors 1 and and and and 116 Answer:

Consider the trinomial to factor it, think of 23x as 2x + 21 x Rewrite 23x as 2x+21x Create two groups Factor out Again 8.6

Problem 3: Factoring when ac is positive. Step 1: Find ac then the factors. Step 2: Use the factors you found to rewrite bx. 10 Factors of 10Sum of factors 1 and and 57 Rewrite using the factors Keep the first and last term Group and Get GCF

Your turn What is the factored form of? Answers Notice that you can get GCF out the whole expression. Solve as the previous
