The Nalco Company, located in Naperville, Illinois

I: Background The Cooling systems used at most commercial buildings, including offices, universities, hospitals and stores consume vast quantities of water. These cooling systems can also develop mineral scales and microbes which lead to increased water and energy consumption and negative environmental impact. Mineral scales consist mostly of carbonates of calcium and magnesium forming on heat-exchange surfaces. These mineral scales makes heat transfer inefficient and increases the use of energy on the system. Microbial growth can lead to the formation of biofilms which in turn also decreases the exchange efficiency.

High levels of biocide intended on cleaning up the water and preventing biofilm on heat exchange surfaces causes several effects. Increased corrosion of system components. Increased risk of system leaks Metal-containing byproducts of corrosion and additional biocide are discharged with the cooling water Whenever water is discharged it is called a “blowdown.” In other words, pollutants are released in the wastewater and fresh water is used to replace the “blowdown.”

Before 3D TRASAR technology, other companies traditionally used antiscalants and antimicrobials at regular intervals or at best. Sodium Aluminate was first used to help stop microbial growth and to keep the heat exchange surfaces clean. Sodium Aluminate also helps to remove Silica and Phosphates.

However when there was a “blowdown,” Silica and Phosphates still entered our environment. Silica is dangerous in small quantities over time, OSHA allows 0.1 mg/m3. Small inhalation can cause silicosis, bronchitis, or cancer, due to the formation in the lungs decreasing lung capacity.

II: 3D TRASAR Technology Instead of on a fixed schedule 3D TRASAR technology helps monitor the condition of cooling water continuously and add appropriate chemicals only when needed. This technique helps to Save water and energy Minimize the use of water-treatment chemicals Decrease environmental damage from discharged water

What does the 3D in 3D TRASAR Technology stand for? Detects if the parameters are changing Determines the correct course of action Delivers exceptional economic and operational advantage 3D TRASAR uses unique chemistries, sensors, algorithms, hardware and software to provide online, real-time performance-based detection ability. The main sensor is the Nalco Corrosion Stress Monitor which detects and responds to preboiler corrosion stress in real time, delivering direct measurement under actual operating conditions. The Nalco Corrosion Stress Monitor helps prevent by measuring and reacting to the net oxidation/reduction potential of the water. The monitor determines the corrective action and responds in real-time by changing oxygen scavenger or metal passivator feed to protect the system.

The Controller used is the 3DT-5000 Controller which. helps to collect The Controller used is the 3DT-5000 Controller which helps to collect the pH, ORP, conductivity and turbidity data. It also incorporates two corrosion sensing probes, which helps to calculate the systems volume, recirculation, make-up, blowdown, and heat rejection rates. The beauty of 3D TRASAR is that it is a universal device all wrapped in one. It features contain a Scale Control, a Bio-Control, and a Corrosion Control. For the Scale Control, it helps to detect the upset preceding a scaling event and takes the action of preventing one again, when founded the 3D TRASAR will increase stress to help minimize operating cost. The Bio-Control unit is only applied when the bio-activity in the water increases or decreases. Corrosion control helps by combining advanced control capabilities with innovative new corrosion inhibition chemistry to provide the best solution to your problem.

III: The Chemistry:    RH The boiler uses a fluorescent tagged scale dispersant polymer with an inert fluorescent tracer This was added to provide scale/deposit inhibition, particle dispersion and to enhance activity of corrosion inhibitors.    RH Monitoring and Dosage Control of Tagged Polymers in Cooling Water Systems, John E Hoots

Resazurin, which is another fluorescent molecule, changes its fluorescent signature when it interacts with respiring microbes. Is used for the real-time test for measuring planktonic and sessile bacteria. By adding Resazurin, this generally helps reduce the use of biocide and also prevents biofilm from building up on surfaces and maintaining efficient heat transfer.

IV: The Numbers Since 2004 their waste has decreased 15% while their production increased 15.2%. Image: Green House Gas Emission.

Greenhouse gas emissions declined 3. 5 percent, while Greenhouse gas emissions declined 3.5 percent, while production increased 5 percent. Over the past five years the greenhouse emissions increased 2.3 percent, a much slower rate however the production increased more than 15 percent over the same period In 2008 Nalco’s global energy efficiency has decreased by 3.2 percent while production has increased by 5 percent. Since 2004 the production has increase 15.2 percent while energy consumption increased 2.3 percent.

V: The Present In 2007 and 2009, Nalco was given The Pennsylvania Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence for its waste minimization and water use reduction. In 2010 and 2011 was given two consecutive Environmental Leadership Award, for its environment and pollution prevention.

VI. Conclusion 3D TRASAR won the 2008 Greener Reaction Award Some of the key factors that the 3D TRASAR Technology helps with is: It monitors the cooling water Adds chemicals when needed, not on a schedule Helps save water and energy Minimizes the use of water-treatment chemicals Decreases environmental damage from discharged water http://www.nalco.com/services/3d-trasar.htm
