Presentation transcript:

Human interaction is not constructed as a single channel – it is multimodal. Speech and gestures correlate to convey meaning. Moreover, human interaction is usually multiparty. It is 3D by its nature.

 Provide richer data than audio.  Still, video recording as a 2D technique is weak, because the interpretation of gestures, use of interactional space, directionality of gaze, and differing participant perspectives is difficult

 Each individual has a space directly in front of them in which all actions take place – it is called the transactional segment.  When individuals interact, their transactional segments overlap – the joint space is called o- space.  It may be connected to turn taking and topic change.

 Participant's bodies and limbs obstruct the view  We cannot see the situation from the participant’s point of view  It can be overcame by installing numerous video cameras, but motion capture techniques are still more accurate

 Three people playing a scene from soap opera  Motion capture equipment and camera  Motion capture image was much better – nothing was obstructing the view and scientists could adopt the view of participants

 Motion capture equipment is much more accurate and useful than video recordings  It can be useful in examining social interaction  It can also be used in studying schizophrenia
