What is scurvy? Scurvy Caused by Vitamin C Deficiency – Completely dietary, no genetic Vitamin C is required for mature collagen formation Without vitamin C the collagen precursor molecules are unstable and breakdown or disassemble Pathology of scurvy Early symptoms: malaise, lethargy, and myalgia can occur Progresses to loosening of teeth, reopening of scars, epidermal rashes and “corkscrew” hairs Late stage scurvy results in neuropathy, jaundice and eventually death.

Background Was not seen until long voyages on ships began to limit diets of fresh fruits and vegetables Epidemiology – usually restricted to poverty stricken countries with little access to fresh fruits and vegetables Also affects elderly patients who are unable to provide for themselves Can also affect people with restricted diets or those with gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcerative colitis or celiac

Background Does not show male or female preference nor does it show age preferences Minimum daily intake of vitamin c is 10 mg RDI for vitamin C = 90-100mg There is no surgical intervention Collagen is required for wound healing so surgery is not advisable Therapeutic intervention is high dose vitamin C
