British Antarctic Survey Routes to Antarctica

British Antarctic Survey Ships BAS has two Royal Research Ships, RRS James Clark Ross and RRS Ernest Shackleton Both are ice strengthened RRS James Clark Ross has some of Britain's most advanced facilities for oceanographic research RRS Ernest Shackleton is primarily a logistic ship, used for the resupply of the BAS stations The ships are registered at Stanley in the Falkland Islands During the Antarctic winter, after annual refit/drydock in Portsmouth, RRS James Clark Ross undertakes scientific research (often in the Arctic) while RRS Ernest Shackleton is chartered into commercial survey work More info available at:

British Antarctic Survey Aircraft The BAS aircraft fleet consists of four De Havilland Canada Twin Otter aircraft and one De Havilland Canada Dash-7 Between them they undertake a wide variety of transport and science missions. The Dash-7 and three of the Twin Otters are equipped with modifications to allow them to carry out airborne science surveys At the beginning of each season the aircrew – eight pilots and four engineers – ferry the aircraft south from their base in the northern hemisphere. Rothera Research Station is the centre for BAS air operations. The Dash-7 undertakes regular shuttle-flights from Rothera to and from the Falkland Islands and Punta Arenas, Chile. BAS aircraft also operate out of Halley Research Station and from field stations at Fossil Bluff and Sky-Blu The Twin Otter aircraft are equipped with skis for landing on snow and ice The Dash-7 also lands on the blue-ice runway at Sky-Blu Field Station More info available at:
