CPDUs? Continuing Professional Development Units Unit of measurement used by ISBE to award credit of participation in a broad range of activities. Various activities to earn CPDUs (see matrix) Attending workshops, conferences, etc. 1 CPDU = 1 hour of attendance 5 hour workshop (not including lunch)= 5 CPDUs Must be offered by an approved provider Illinois School Counselor Association www.ilschoolcounselor.org
Examples of Activities Supervising an Intern: Up to 30 CPDUs per renewal period Completed College Coursework : 15 CPDUs/ sem hr Curriculum Development/Assessment: Up to 11 CPDUs/ sem Participate on improvement/planning committee: up to 8 CPDUs/ sem *Be sure you have all required documents needed for proof of evidence! Example: Supervising an intern requires a written contract between you and the institution from which the intern is enrolled at & a log of dates. Purpose of CPDUs Advance both knowledge & skills consistent with IL Standards endorsed in. Develop knowledge & skills in areas determined by State Board of Education to be critical for school service personnel. Address knowledge, skills, goals of your local improvement plan. Address the needs of serving students with disabilities, including adapting & modifying clinical/professional practices to meet the need of students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. What about CEs and CEUs? CEs are used by the State of Illinois for licensure. e.g. LPC would collect CEs. CEUs are used at some conferences and equate to 5 hours of attendance for every 1 CEU. Approved Providers Workshops and conferences only count towards CPDUs if the provider is recognized by ISBE. Some approved providers include: IMHCA, ISCA, and ICA. What about Part-Time Employment? The # of CPDUs needed to renew can be reduced by 50% for any amount during the certificate-holder has been employed and performing services on a part-time basis. CPDU Reduction Continued Example: If you are .50 FTE during all 5 years of the renewal period then you would be required to complete 50% of CPDUs required or 40 CPDUs. For each semester you are not employed (inactive) you subtract that semester’s CPDUs e.g. unemployed 1.5 years. What if I hold two certificates? When two certificates are being used at the same time, the certificate used for 50% or more of the school day determines the continuing professional development requirements you complete. What are Rolling Credits? In the second and subsequent renewal cycles, and creditable activities completed on or after April 1st if not claimed in the prior renewal period can be “rolled over” into the subsequent renewal cycle. Tips when using the ECS Allow yourself time to enter with no distractions! Often kicked out after short period of time Limited characters. Abbreviate & be concise with descriptions ECS keeps a running total of your CPDUs for you! Statement of Assurance An electronic statement verifying that you have completed all of the professional development activities that you listed on the Educator Certification System. Submitting the Statement of Assurance Can only be done on or after September 1 of the final year of your validity cycle. If I expire 7/1/2011 then I can submit it no sooner than 9/1/2010 Once you have entered all of the applicable professional development onto the Educator Certification System, select "Statement of Assurance". Next, select "Submit/Review Statement of Assurance". Ensure that everything listed is accurate, and "Submit the Statement of Assurance". After submitting the statement Once the Statement is approved by your Regional Superintendent and the State Teacher Certification Board (as opposed to the State Board of Education), you may re-register with your Regional Office of Education for the next validity cycle.
