 Apostrophes can be used to show possession for singular or plural nouns. ex: Johns fun puppy loves to play. ex: The dogs toys are from the pet store. Add the apostrophe!

 They can be used to show the omission of letters or numbers like contractions. Ex: We’ll be going to the museum. What is the omitted word?

 Hyphens are used to divide a word between syllables at the end of a line.  They are also used in compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine. ex: My sister is twenty two and makes bad mis takes. Fill in the hyphens.

 They can also be used to separate parts of compound words.  They are able to form temporary adjectives. ex: My brother in law lives in Texas. ex: I love cotton candy flavored ice cream in ice cream cones. Add the hyphens!

 Dashes are used to set off words that show a change in thought. ex: Bob—he gets good grades—likes sports.

 Dashes are also used to separate appositives that contain commas. ex: George has three dogs a German Sheppard, a Siberian Husky, and a Golden Retriever. Fill in the dash.

 Dashes and hyphens are commonly confused. Just remember that a hyphen is shorter than a dash.  To make a dash on the computer, type in two hyphens right next to each other and continue typing. There should be no space between the dash and the following word. The computer will automatically change the two hyphens to a dash.
