EQ: How do writers use craft techniques with purpose? Objective: Scholars will be able to draft ideas, by using their mentor author’s craft techniques with purpose, as evidenced in written responses. Do Now: Add one craft technique to your graphic organizer you recognized from your mentor author after your weekend reading.

Vocabulary Temporal (adj)-Pertaining to, or expressing time

How do writers study and learn from mentor authors? Writers think about topics in which they are experts, things they know all about, so that they can teach others. Writers brainstorm possible things to teach about their topic. Writers consider their audience when choosing a topic. Writers try on topics to see if they have enough supporting facts. Writers revise by adding more details to teach more about their topic. Writers plan how their writing/story is organized. Writers reread to revise to make sure there are no errors.

How do writers study and learn from mentor authors? Writers show, not tell using their five senses. Writers use dialogue tags to enhance meaning. Writers use temporal words to signal a change in events. Writers use ellipses to create dramatic tension.

Function of Em dash An em dash is the width of an m. Use an em dash sparingly(smoothly/well)in formal writing. In informal writing, em dashes may replace commas, semicolons, colons, and parentheses to indicate added emphasis, an interruption, or an abrupt change of thought.

Pay attention to: 1.How do the introductions tend to go? What is included? 2. How does the middle or body tend to go? What is included? 3.How do the conclusions tend to go? What is included?
