Equality, Diversity and Rights in Health and Social Care Introduction

Learning Outcomes Understand concepts of equality, diversity and rights in relation to health and social care. Know discriminatory practices in health and social care. Understand how national initiatives promote anti-discriminatory practice. Know how anti-discriminatory practice is promoted in health and social care settings.

What is Equality? Being equal, especially in rights, status or opportunities. All individuals should be treated equally, and there are laws in place to ensure that this happens. In accordance with the law, organisations have equality policies to ensure that everyone is treated equally. (Stretch and Whitehouse 2010 pg: 48)

What is Diversity? Recognising that people are different from one another and they have their own unique individuality, personality, identity and social and cultural background.
