experience expert‏ ---By XiaoGe Yang The cultures of the East and the West have a lot of differences, and greeting is on of them. Here is a story: a friend of mine told me that one day when she finished cooking her dinner, one of her flat mates came into the kitchen. In order to greet him, she said: “ Hi, have you had your meal?”. To her surprise, that man answered: “No, will you cook for me?” This made her feel a little bit embarrassed. This event typically showed the culture differences between the East and the West. Actually in China, “Have you had your meal?” is just the way we greet each other, and it has no other meaning but “How are you?”. However, in western countries, this sentence is not greeting at all. People may think that you are inviting them to dinner if you ask them about their meals. More often than not they just use “Hi!” to greet each other. This event made me notice that sometimes culture differences can cause misunderstanding, and I also felt the importance of understanding another culture.

Culture 文 化 Wen Hua Translation ---- by Zhang Ruiqi

I translate culture into 文化 (WEN HUA) Mainly from two points: 1.Culture origins from Latin word “Colere”, meaning to cultivate, which refers to patterns of human activity and gradually some symbolic structures that give such activities significance and importance. Culture has been called “the way of life for an entire society, such as manners, dress, language, religion, etc. (WEN) 人文 2. Development or improvement of the mind by education or training. ( HUA) 教化

Sense for sense In China “Wen Hua” can be explained separately as “Ren Wen” and “Jiao Hua”. The former one suggest the involvement of human activities and the basic tools for communication like language …which just explain the DIVERSE aspect of culture meaning. 文,人文 The later one means through all these activities, the improvement of human’s mind, which explain the development of Culture and the effect that Culture gave to humanbeings. 化, 教化
