Background Information ● Creator of McCarthyism was U.S Senator Joseph McCarthy ● McCarthyism is the practice of making accusations of disloyalty or treason without the consideration of evidence. ● Consisted of the government trying to weed out spies from the communist party.
Background Information ● McCarthyism was targeted toward Americans ● affected all levels of society ● caused turmoil in America and many debates ● Joseph McCarthy lost his power and allies due to senators voting to condemn him for his actions
Important Dates ● February 9th, 1950 McCarthy launched his first salvo (outburst) ● he claimed that he was aware of the 205 card carrying members of the communist party who worked for the US department of state. ●February 20th, 1950 McCarthy addressed the Senate and made a list of claims against suspected communists
Important Dates ● McCarthy’s accusations went on into 1954 ● he interrogated army officials (including decorated war heroes for 8 weeks, and also accused high level government officials) ● In 1957, at the age of 48, McCarthy died of poor health and alcoholism.
