How to Use the Program

Why Use Oxford Collocations Dictionary? Oxford Collocations Dictionary helps students of English improve both written and spoken language skills. This dictionary includes over 250,000 common word combinations (collocations) and over 75,000 examples that are essential for English improvement.

How to Find the Program Step 1: Select the ESL Resources folder on the Skills Center desktop image Step 2: Select the Vocabulary folder

How to Find the Program Step 3: Select the Oxford Collocations Dictionary icon Step 4: View the main screen

Navigating the Main Screen Type any word you want to look up in this box and press enter Use this button to copy words and definitions onto the clipboard so you can print them out in one list The word you have typed in will appear here Use this button to print Use this button to change font size

Look Up Words in any Program Using the Genie Tool! Click on the “Genie” button to use the Oxford Collocations Dictionary while you are working in other programs If you are using Word or Internet Explorer, place your cursor over any word and the Genie will automatically look it up

Improve Your Vocabulary Using the Exercises Feature! Step 1: Click on the “Exercises” button on the main screen Step 2: Select an exercise from the five available options

Missing Words Exercises Read the sentences and decide what one word is missing from all of them Type the missing word in the spaces at the bottom of the screen

Crossword Exercises Click on any of the empty boxes in the puzzle and a clue will appear on the right Type in the word that is missing from all of the sentences in the clue Click the “Clue” button if you need a hint!

Drag and Drop Exercises Use the words at the bottom of the page to complete each sentence. Drag each word to the correct sentence by using your mouse

Prepositions Exercises Use the drop down menu to select the preposition that completes each sentence correctly

Split Sentence Exercises Complete each sentence correctly by matching each sentence beginning with the appropriate ending. Drag the purple endings to the gray beginnings by using your mouse

Checking Your Answers Check your answers to any exercise by clicking the “Check Answers” button on the bottom of the screen A green dot means you have answered the question correctly. A red dot indicates an incorrect answer

Exiting the Program Exit the program from any screen by clicking the red X in the top right corner of the screen. Speak with the Skills Center staff if you have questions or need more help with this program!
