Joseph Schuyler Long Joseph became deaf at the age of 12. He entered the School for he Deaf in Iowa. After graduating in 1884 he entered Gallaudet College in Long received a Doctor of Letters Degree from Gallaudet College in 1914.

Joseph Schuyler Long Joseph became a head teacher at the Iowa School for the Deaf and an editor of the school periodical, “The Iowa Hawkeye.” In 1902 he was made acting principal and full principal in 1908.

Joseph Schuyler Long Joseph published “The Sign Language, A Manual of Signs being a descriptive vocabulary of signs used by the Deaf in the United States and Canada.” It was published by Washington, D.C.; Press of Gibson Bros. In The Schuyler Long Collection at Gallaudet College was the first standard picture dictionary of sign. Joseph published The Sign L

Joseph Schuyler Long Joseph also wrote a book of poetry titled “Out of the Silence”, In 1928 he began work on an anthology of poems by deaf authors called “Silent Muse Anthology”. On October 31, 1933 he died from heart failure at the age of 64.
