St. Lawrence’s Primary School, York Laura Calsela and James Foster ‘Cooking Culture’

Project Aims To explore ways of motivating children who are disengaged from traditional education. To design a series of lessons based around cooking and culture. To work in partnership with local businesses. To develop practical teaching skills to compliment our degree.

The Project Year 6 class - 30 pupils. 5 lessons - small groups. Individual aims for each lesson. Ending with ‘Come Dine With Me’-style event at York College.

‘Come Dine With Me’ at York College 4 e.com/watch?v=F vXZ-PO6hxE

What We Learnt The importance of group and collaborative learning and partnerships. Top-down model - teacher imparts wisdom to students vs. teacher and students learning together. Evaluation - continuous assessment of the project. Risk-assessment. Post-university?

What We Learnt It’s not a script! Lesson Plans. Knowledge (facts, figures etc.) vs. self-motivation, engagement, interest and application. Post-university - primary education? Opportunity - probably wouldn’t have done this otherwise. 6

The Project and Our Degree BA Language and Literature in Education. Modules - ‘Informal Contexts of Education’ ‘Alternative Forms of Education’. From course handbook: “Encourage students to reflect critically on the aims and values of education in society”.
