Presentation transcript:

Competency: Draw Floor Plans Objective: Demonstrate the rules and standards for electrical fixture placement.

Verify Fixture Placement Outlets Lights Switches and switch leg connectors Miscellaneous fixtures Exhaust fan Ceiling fan TV Telephone Smoke detector Chimes/Bells/Buzzers

Placement of Switches Each room MUST have at least one light controlled by a switch Latch side of door/entrance Outside of closets Hallways, stairs, garage lighting controlled from both ends Multiple switches for large rooms

Placement of Outlets Furniture/Appliance Considerations Living & Service areas One outlet per 6’ of wall No further than 6’ from each corner Kitchen area One outlet per 4’ of wall Each appliance should have an outlet Hallways Every 15’ of wall

Placement of Outlets Bathrooms At least two outlets One above (12”) sink or counter (GFI) Weatherproof outlets Each side of exterior Position for decorative lighting At least one outlet and light in attic & crawl space Ground Fault Interrupter outlets (GFI) Near water sources (Including outside)

Placement of lights Sufficient foot-candles for each room Illumination for desired activities Lighting over dining table Exterior General illumination and decoration Motion detectors for security Waterproof Lighting for stairs and halls

Electrical Fixture Plan Shows approximate fixture placement Circuit design not included Electrical loads not considered Fixtures may be shown on Floor Plan Avoid crowding When Using CAD Layers created for various details  Fixtures, switches, etc.

Electrical Symbols Drawn in approximate locations Standard placement Switches = 48” high from floor to bottom Outlets = 12” high from floor to bottom Note dimensional changes near the symbol when placement varies from standard as explained above (ie: floor outlet, or near floor in wall below tall windows)

Electrical Symbols Connect symbols for switches to fixtures with switch leg connector symbol (line between switch and fixture or outlet) Provide a symbol legend Dimensions are not provided except in special situations (as per previous slide)

Assignment / References Take your scaled sketch floor plans and draw the switch, outlet, fixture, “leg” locations COLORS: SWITCHES, OUTLETS, FIXTURES, “LEGS” Reference text pg Blueprint Reading course pg Classroom sample plans
