ACT-ADDII-1: Students will prepare electrical plans a) Understand general codes related to electrical plans.

 Indicates a home’s outlets, switches and related electrical systems, such as phones, thermostats, and light fixtures

 Duplex convenience outlets should be a maximum of 12ft. apart

 Duplex outlets should be no more than 6 ft from a corner  There should be a duplex outlet in any wall over 2ft long

 Consider furniture layout if possible, so that duplex outlets do not become inaccessible behind large pieces

 Place a duplex outlet next to or behind a desk or table where a light Is needed, or near a probable reading area

 Place a duplex outlet near a fireplace for an adjacent table light, for a vacuum, or for fireplace maintenance

 Place a duplex outlet in a hallway, for vacuums

 Duplex outlets should be placed close together in kitchens. They are required every 4’ of counter space, and no more than 2’ from a corner

 Each bath, sink, or make-up table should have a duplex outlet

 Each enclosed bath or laundry room should have an exhaust fan  Rooms with operable windows do not require fans, although they are desirable

 Any outlet within 5 ft. of water, outside, or in garages should be protected by the GFI (ground-fault circuit-interrupter)

 A light outlet is necessary outside all entries and exterior doors

 A waterproof duplex outlet should be placed at a convenient exterior location, such as a patio

 Ceiling lights are common in children’s bedrooms for easy illumination; master bedrooms may have a switched duplex outlet for bedside lamp

 The kitchen may have a light over the sink, although in a very well-lit kitchen this may be an extra light

 Bathroom lights are generally placed above the vanity or in the center of the room  In a large bath recessed lights may be placed in the shower or above the tub

 Place switches in a manner that provides easiest control of light

 Locate lights in a large closet or in any alcove or pantry that requires light

 Light stairwells

 Place lights and outlets in garages or shops in relationship to their use

 Place exterior lighting properly to illuminate walks, drives, patios, decks or other high use areas

 Broken lines indicate connections between outlets and switches; they do not necessarily indicated the path of the wire
