Activity #1 Bring in a treat that the class likes and pass it out to a certain “group” in the class (i.e. boys, girls, brown hair, etc.). Have the class sit down for Happy Birthday, Martin Luther King. Lead a discussion regarding how those that did not receive the treat felt and if it was fair or unfair.

Activity #2 Read My Dream of Martin Luther King. Discuss the bus boycott and peaceful protesting with the class. Make an outline drawing of a bus with windows. Have the students cut out magazine clips or draw all different kinds of people sitting together on the bus.

Activity #3 Play part of the I Have a Dream speech for the class. Next, have the children draw a picture of a dream they have for making the world a better place. Children will then finish the sentence “I have a dream that…” and those can be compiled into a class book.

Activity #4 Read Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Then, have a class discussion about “big” words (i.e. peace, love, freedom). As a class, identify important events in Dr. King’s life. Create art representations of important events, and sequence the events in order for a timeline.

Activity #5 Write a class thank you note to Dr. King for what we have today due to his actions. Also, include what he has taught them about being brave and standing up for what is right.
