Reformation What is a reform? Does anyone remember what the Reformation is from when we studied Christianity? What are indulgences? Who is given credit for starting the Reformation?

Reformation What is a reform? A change Does anyone remember what the Reformation is from when we studied Christianity? Breaking away from the Catholic Church because they didn’t like what the Pope was doing or the power the church had or the selling of indulgences. What are indulgences? The giving of money to the church in exchange for forgiveness for things you have done. This can be done before or after you have done something wrong and you receive a written letter of indulgence forgiving you. Who is given credit for starting the Reformation? Martin Luther, a German Catholic priest, decided to break away from the church when he tacked the 95 Theses on the door of a church. The 95 Theses was his explanation for what was wrong with the Catholic Church. The people who joined him became known as Protestants because they protested against the Catholic Church.

Vocab Reformation: movement to change/reform the abuses in the Catholic Church, which ended in the reformed Christian denomination of Protestants or Lutherans. Catholic Church: the Christian church governed by the Pope. Indulgences: pardons excusing punishment for a sin that has been forgiven. Martin Luther: German priest who disagreed with the Pope and selling of indulgences and compiled his complaints into a petition, the 95 These, which ended in Luther breaking away into another denomination (Lutherans, Protestants) 95 Theses: the declaration of 95 allegations (complaints) made against the Catholic Church by Luther

Primary Source Analysis:95 Theses Read through YOUR section of the 95 Theses ANNOTATE (make notes and “talk” to the text) Answer the following questions on the paper: What did Luther identify as problems within the Church? What were his suggestions? Do you agree or disagree with what Luther is saying? Does your Renaissance Man or Woman? Why? SHARE-OUT

Protest Simulation Reformation Relation to School God Education Catholic Church DOE Pope School Chancellor Priests Principals/Teachers Luther, Protestants Students The DOE has had the Chancellor interpret the rules of Education for the students of New York City. The Chancellor has been making rules to increase the power of the DOE and his own power, taking money as payment for student’s who have misbehaved to have their offenses wiped off their record. As students, you disagree with the actions of the DOE and the Chancellor, so you have decided to write a petition (similar to that of Martin Luther’s 95 theses) about how you think the DOE and the Chancellor should improve NYC schools.

Counter Reformation VOCAB: Counter reformation – the reaction of the Catholic Church to the Reformation reaffirming the validity of the saints and authority of the Pope. Created new religious orders (like Jesuits) that work among the people – instead of secluding themselves like monks and nuns Addressed the corruption and complaints of Protestants

Journal Reflection Answer ALL of the following questions: What factors led to the weakening of the Catholic Church? What factors led to the beginning of the Reformation? What were the effects of the Reformation? Why was there a Counter Reformation? Homework: (extra credit) revise and finalize your petition and make it look like an official document (typed) Collecting: #
