Placement The Accuplacer LOEP is a computerized adaptive placement exam with no writing sample or oral evaluation. Students are placed in one of four levels. –ESL 10 –ESL 11A –ESL 21A –English 1

A Critical Juncture An important decision in the academic careers of LEP students new to SMC is the decision they make about whether to take English or ESL courses. Often they self-select, and they may not be the best judges.

Which Placement Test? Students are asked these questions. –What is your primary language? –Do you have difficulty speaking English or understanding spoken English? –Do you have difficulty reading or writing English? –Do you plan to take English as a Second Language classes at Santa Monica College?
