 Jean Baptise Grenouille is the protagonist.  Unwanted Parisian orphan.  Has no scent- rejected by others.  Develops extraordinary power to discern odours.  Comes to loathe the scents of others- spent 7 years alone in a cave on top of the Massif central.  Murderer.

 Read through chapter one and consider what the 5 most important things a student should question. Attempt to answer them  Could include: setting, narrative style, subjective or objective, names, imagery.

 Were you surprised by the description of 18 th century France?
