Gifts – not an easy matter Form 8 Shchepilova D. Davlyatova R. Shevchenko N. Teacher: Likhachyova E. A. LOZNOYE – 2006

The rules of gift-giving and gift-receiving

Hypothesis Is it really difficult to choose an appropriate gift for a person?

Cultural note Gifts are not supposed to be expensive. In Britain foreigners are usually expected to give typical objects from their country as gifts. British people, as a rule, give chocolate or small presents to relatives and friends. The British will open the box in your presence to express their admiration In Russian people sometimes buy expensive gifts for their relatives because they want them to have them.

Occasions for giving gifts Friend’s birthday Religions ceremony (baptism) Party New baby Meal at her friend’s House-warming party Graduation Getting a new job Buying a new house books, a CD computer games, a perfume religious books or object box of chocolates baby toys flowers stuffed animals flowers, a video cassette records decoration for the house

Choosing a gift According to the results of the poll choosing a gift depends on:

Receiving gifts When British and Russian people receive gift they open the box in you presence thank you and express their admiration

Some ways of expressing admiration Thank you very much I appreciate it Thanks a lot Thanks a million I am happy to have it I am grateful to you Thank again You shouldn't have done it Any time It was my pleasure Don’t mention it You are welcome I was happy to do it

What to do when you receive gifts you don’t like Right Hide your disappointment Pretend you are happy Say that it is what you wanted Thank your friend most heartily Wrong Show how disappointed you are Say “ thank you “ and put it aside Say “ thank you ” but I already have one

Our conclusion We think that it is the spirit behind the gift that matters most and not the gift itself

An expected present is not worth giving!
