Fluids become Solids Fluids are easier to move and they take the shape of their containers. Ie: Slurry of Cement, The making of Steel: The mixture of iron, carbon and hematite are heated to 1650 degrees C to melt everything together so more materials can be added.

Other uses of Fluids Oil is added to the engine of a car to decrease friction Paint is applied to iron to prevent rust from forming A Fluid circulating in the back of your fridge keeps temperatures cool. Fluids such as gases can be forced into smaller volume Ie: scuba tanks

The Particle Theory of Matter 1.All matter is made up of tiny particles 2.All particles are in constant motion 3.All particles of one substance are identical 4.Temperature affects the speed at which particles move. 5.In liquids and solids the particles are close together and have strong forces of attraction 6.In a gas, there are spaces between the particles.

Liquids can Flow Particles in a liquid can overcome some of their attraction to each other and slide past each other. This is why liquids flow and take shape of their container.

Gases can Flow Gas particles move so quickly and are so far apart they they overcome almost all of their attraction to each other. This is why gases flow and spread out to all parts of their container. Ie: if you spray air freshener in one part of a room, you can soon smell it in other parts of the room.

Thermal Expansion and Contraction When the temperature of a solid, liquid or gas decreases, it particles move slowly and close together. As a result the substance shrinks or contracts. Substance expand or contract with changing temperature at their own particular rate.

Mixtures of Matter In Smalls groups of 3-4 complete the mini lab. Once you have completed the lab. Use your particle theory of matter to explain what happens when substances are combined?
