TEACHERS’ WORKING TIME

Teachers in Italy are civil servants (government employees) and their working time is regulated by the National Labour Contract. Teachers’ working time

Teachers’ duties include: Classroom teaching Other activities related to teaching Teachers’ working time

The teaching hours are spread over at least 5 working days per week Pre-school (3 to 6 yrs) : 25 hrs /week Primary School (6 to 11 yrs) : 22 hrs /week Lower Sec. School (11 to 14 yrs) : 18 hrs /week Upper Sec. School (14 to 19 yrs) : 18 hrs /week CLASSROOM TEACHING Teachers’ working time Part of the above hours may be devoted to activities such as individual lessons for students lagging behind, laboratory activities, supply teaching

OTHER ACTIVITIES RELATED TO TEACHING Individual activities There is no pre-established total number of hours devoted to the above activities Teachers’ working time Collegiate activities assessment and correction planning and preparing lessons relations with parents attending meetings of the teachers’ board (max 40 hrs/year) attending class council meetings (max 40 hrs/year) mid-term and end of term assessment, exams, reports planning and developing the School’s Education Provision Plan (P.O.F.)

TEACHERS’ PAY All the above activities are remunerated on a monthly basis and the monthly pay varies according to seniority and the grade of school. Teachers’ working time Teachers can work additional hours for extra curricular activities, participation in projects or supply work, according to the requirements of each school. They receive extra money for the above activities.

TEACHERS’ EVALUATION

Currently, there is no evaluation system for teachers in Italy. Teachers’ evaluation Consequently there is no career progression (they can only aspire to become headteachers). Wage increases are based on seniority (not on merit)

A draft law to reform teachers’ initial training, recruitment and career development is currently being discussed in Parliament and is expected to be approved by September 2009 Teachers’ evaluation

THE MAIN CHANGES Teachers will no longer be recruited through national competitions but directly by schools The draft law introduces three career stages with different levels of remuneration, based on periodical evaluation and merit JUNIOR TEACHER ADVANCED TEACHER EXPERT TEACHER Expert teachers can apply for the position of deputy head who is responsible of supervising and coordinating teaching and planning activities of a school
