Cross-sectional questionnaire National Association Emergency Medical Technicians USA (1546 respondents): 50% (± 35%) of resuscitation attempts estimated futile 40% (± 34%) of resuscitative efforts undertaken in situations in which they personally would not desire resuscitation Marco et al., J Emerg Med, 2003; 24 (1): 101-6

Definition Perception of inappropriate CPR Resuscitation efforts perceived by providers as disproportionate to the expected prognosis of the patient in terms of survival or quality of life

Theoretical framework Perception of inappropriate CPR is associated with moral distress Accumulating moral distress may be associated with job leave, burnout and a decreased quality of patient care Quality of care may be affected directly by perception of inappropriate CPR

Adapted from Piers et al., JAMA, 2011; 306 (24): Patient care situation Patients receiving CPR Moral Distress (ACUTE stress ) Healthcare provider situation Personal characteristics Job strain (workload, teamwork) Ethical environment Professional role (EMT, nurse, physician) Perception of Inappropriate CPR Burnout (CHRONIC stress) Intent to leave job ↓ Quality of patient care The REAppropriate Study

Objectives Determine the prevalence of perception of inappropriate CPR out of hospital or in the Emergency Department Analyze the patient related and healthcare provider related characteristics associated with this perception Analyze the impact on the healthcare provider in terms of emotional distress
