Beginning the project If we want to go through with this we will need to: (1) decide where we will do this (contact heads of HDBs and see if any residents would be interested) (2) check the buildings out and find out technical details (3) once decided on which buildings, find out costs (4) source materials (5) apply for grant

How is a green roof made?

Search for a sponsor Dear Sir/Madam, We are group of students from UWCSEA East, interested in the development of green roofs. As you may know the National Parks Board has introduced the Skyrise Greenery Incentive Scheme (SGIS). Under the Scheme, NParks will fund up to 50% of installation costs of green roofs and vertical greenery. We are very keen to see as many businesses as possible across Singapore utilize this opportunity. For this reason we have been looking implement the cheapest and simplest low maintenance green roofs, possible. If you decide to proceed with us and create a green roof, we will organise the labour and the materials needed. Would you be interested in having a green roof built on the roof of your office building, or supporting us with this project? Although we have minimised costs greatly some funding on your part will be necessary although as I stated before, we have worked hard to find the cheapest design possible. In November this year, we are hosting a Global Issues Network conference, in which hundreds of students and adults from all over Asia will participate. Helping us to create a green roof would be considerable positive advertising for your company, not to mention the added benefits of having a green roof installed on your building, such as lower temperatures, reduced carbon emissions and lower sound pollution. I hope you consider the proposition, however if you feel this opportunity is not in your interests please let us know as soon as possible. I have copied this to Lester, our champion for the Group's green cause and to Peter whom you have met. Sinovasan is in the green committee. Do note that we have set aside a budget of max $5000 for this project assuming a further grant of $5000 from the government whom I assume you will be spearheading the fund application. Green roof benefits Why? Helps reduce greenhouse gases. Makes buildings cooler. Helps prevent flooding. Could relate to biodiversity. Students will have accomplished something concrete. Nice for Singaporeans to have a roof garden. Promotes the green roof concept. Contributes to Singapore’s ‘City in a Garden’ vision.

So what can you do? Investigate environmental initiatives in your own countries. Think if you could implement a green roof on your own school or community. Look into funds and grants from the government. Be creative and ambitious.
