The roof of a building is often described by it’s type. Roof types are determined by the form and slope/pitch of the roof. ROOF TYPES SLOPE = RISE : RUN (# of inches) : (per foot) :12
Shed Roof – Slopes down on one side Flat Roof – Very little slope (minimum 1/8 inch per foot) ROOF TYPES
Gable Roof – Slopes down on two sides Hip Roof – Slopes down on all sides
Dutch Roof Slopes down on all sides Upper portion is a gable roof Lower portion is a hip roof ROOF TYPES
Valley – the junction of a roof face with another or a wall ROOF TYPES Roof Pitch Low Up to 3:12 Medium 4:12 to 7:12 High 7:12 to 12:12
Mansard Roof Slopes down on all sides Lower portion has a long, steep slope Upper portion has a short, shallow slope Dormer-small structure with a window projecting from a sloping roof ROOF TYPES
Gambrel Roof Slopes down on two sides Lower portion has a steep slope Upper portion has a shallow slope May have dormers ROOF TYPES
