Paul’s Antioch Labors and Second Jerusalem Trip (Famine Relief Visit) Acts 11:19-30; 12:25 Galatians 2:1-10

NIV Galatians 2:1 Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with Barnabas. I took Titus along also. 2 I went in response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But I did this privately to those who seemed to be leaders, for fear that I was running or had run my race in vain. 3 Yet not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek. 4 This matter arose because some false brothers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. 5 We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might remain with you. 6 As for those who seemed to be important-- whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not judge by external appearance-- those men added nothing to my message. 7 On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as Peter had been to the Jews. 8 For God, who was at work in the ministry of Peter as an apostle to the Jews, was also at work in my ministry as an apostle to the Gentiles. 9 James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the Jews. 10 All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.

I.Antioch on the Orontes (A.D ) A. Hellenist Jewish Christians began evangelizing Antioch A.D 1. Paul is not the lone genius in pioneering Gentile evangelism B. Evangelism met with instant success 1. it was if this is what they were waiting for 2. a large number gave their allegiance to Jesus C. Jerusalem sent Barnabas to investigate this new church 1. God’s blessing was upon the church 2. Barnabas went to Tarsus to recruit Paul for church leadership

D. For one year Barnabas and Paul met with the church and taught great numbers 1. disciples first called Christians ( Cristianouß) II.Second Jerusalem Visit (Famine Relief A.D. 46) A. Agabus predicted a famine (Acts 11:28) 1. Judea hit hard between 45 – 48 A.D. 2. Antioch church helped Judean church with a money gift 3. Paul, Barnabas, and Titus delivered the gift 4. Later returned to Antioch with John Mark (Acts 12:25) B. Paul wanted to accomplish two things: 1. lay before the apostles his law-free gospel a. went up according to a revelation – not summoned by the Jerusalem apostles

b. Paul was not concerned about his gospel’s validity, but its practicability c. this gospel would only be effective if in fellowship with the Jerusalem church d. it would be disastrous if the cause of Christ would be divided(church would be split!) e. Paul did not believe the truthfulness of his message was at stake – it was not of human origin f. Jerusalem leaders recognized Paul’s gospel and his vocation as an apostle 2. Apostles set a demarcation of mission fields a. Was this geographical (Gentile world v. Palestine) or ethnic (Gentiles v. Jews)?

b. Would Paul unite Jew and Gentile into one fellowship or form Christian churches and Christian synagogues? c. we best understand this demarcation as being primarily geographic d. Paul would go to the Gentiles and the Jerusalem church (Peter, James, & John) to the Jews
