Famine in 20th Century Period I 1900 –1920: Mortality very low and confined to Africa Period II 1920 – 1970: 85 % of famine deaths, predominantly China and Soviet Union Period III 1970 – 2000: 12% of famine deaths, all in Africa and South/Southeast Asia

Famine in 20th Century 20th century was worst ever for famine mortality Drought famines in Nigeria and Ethiopia War famines in Angola, Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo), Liberia, and Sierra Leone Many famines have no mortality estimates available, approx. 70 million to 80 million deaths in 20th century 21st century famines still persist Mass mortality famines: N. Korea, Ethiopia and Sudan

Dought Affected Africa People at risk? More than 38 million people are victims of a vast hunger crisis in Africa. Famine has Multiple Causes War (Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan) Misrule (Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe) Drought (Ethiopia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zambia, Zimbabwe) Pestilence (Niger) Famine has an ally in AIDS: AIDS makes people too weak too cope with hunger Famine may occur even when there is no general scarcity of food

Types of Aid Mercy Corps has helped deliver water to 16 Kenyan villages in the last few days, providing relief to almost 120,000 people. The organization is accepting donations to continue expanding its work. The International Rescue Committee is accepting donations that will provide medical screenings, expand water-supply systems and offer help for pregnant women, among other efforts. The ELCA World Hunger Relief is accepting donations to provide immediate aid to refugee camps in the Horn of Africa. One hundred percent of donations will be used for regional relief, including filling a food distribution gap by providing enriched porridge to children and the elderly who are too weak to eat dry food..
