ASTRONOMY The Moon (A.K.A. Luna) By the end of this presentation, students will be able to Estimate the time, given the phase of the moon and its position in the sky. Predict the location of the moon (rising, transiting, and setting) knowing its phase.

OBJECTIVES By the end of this presentation, students will be able to estimate the time, given the phase of the moon and its position in the sky. predict the location of the moon (rising, transiting, and setting) knowing its phase.

TELLING TIME Zenith o + East North o South West Based on the meridians of the Celestial Sphere, the sun rises at about 6 a.m.; transits at 12 noon; and sets about 6 p.m. + o

TELLING TIME A New moon will rise with the sun.; transit at 12 noon; Zenith o + East North o South West A New moon will rise with the sun.; transit at 12 noon; and set about 6 p.m. + o

TELLING TIME Zenith o + Need to work on the animation of this frame East North o South West A 1st Quarter moon will rise when the sun transits at 12 noon; transit when the sun sets at about 6 p.m.; and set about midnight. + o

TELLING TIME A Full moon will rise when the sun sets; Zenith o + East North o South West A Full moon will rise when the sun sets; transits at midnight; and set about 6 a.m. + o

TELLING TIME Zenith o + East North o South West A waxing crescent moon will rise sometime between 6 a.m. and noon; transits about 6 hours after it rises; and sets about 6 hours after that. + o

TELLING TIME Zenith o + East North o South West A waxing gibbous moon will rise sometime between noon and 6p.m. ; transits about 6 hours after it rises; and sets about 6 hours after that. + o

SUN TELLING TIME This diagram shows the position of the moon at four locations in its orbit around the earth: New Moon, 1st Quarter, Full Moon and 3rd Quarter.

SUN TELLING TIME Placing the moon in various positions in its orbit provides a clue as to the angle between the sun and the moon and its lag time or lead time. +1 hr. -1 hr. +2 hr. -2 hr. +3 hr. -3 hr. +4 hr. -4 hr. +5 hr. -5 hr. +6 hr. -6 hr. +7 hr. -7 hr. +8 hr. -8 hr. -9 hr. +9 hr. +10 hr. -10 hr. +11 hr. -11 hr. +12 hr. -12 hr. +13 hr. +14 hr. -13 hr.

SUN TELLING TIME Knowing the phases of the moon, when that phase is recognized in the sky, the direction of the sun can be located and the time estimated. +1 hr. -1 hr. +2 hr. -2 hr.
