Lesson 3: Time Worked Consumer Math: Pages 4-7

Employees’ wages are based on the time that they spend on the job Employees’ wages are based on the time that they spend on the job. In these problems, note that A.M. refers to the morning; P.M refers to afternoon. Example Manny arrived at work at 7:00 A.M. He went out for lunch at 12:00 noon. He returned at 1:00 and worked until 3:00. How many hours did he work? Step 1: Find the A.M. time and the P.M. time. Subtract the earlier time from the later time. 12:00 noon (later time) 3:00 P.M. (later time) -7:00 A.M. (earlier time) -1:00 P.M. (earlier time) 5:00 = 5 hours 0 minutes 2:00 = 2 hours 0 minutes

Example. Manny arrived at work at 7:00 A. M Example Manny arrived at work at 7:00 A.M. He went out for lunch at 12:00 noon. He returned at 1:00 and worked until 3:00. How many hours did he work? Step 2: Find the total number of hours worked. Add the A.M. time and the P.M time together. 5 hours and 0 minutes +2 hours and 0 minutes 7 hours and 0 minutes Manny worked 7 hours.

The later time might need to be renamed before you can subtract the earlier time from it. Study the following example of renaming hours. Notice the abbreviations of hr for hour and min for minute.
