Instructional Technology Service Large Format Printing Formatting the poster  Establish Page Size  48 X 36 recommended  Image Sources and Types  GIF, JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BMP

Instructional Technology Service Large Format Printing Using Images  Web based images or GIFS  Scanning and Scaling of images  Vector and Raster based images

Instructional Technology Service Large Format Printing Scanning Images  Scanned images composed of tiny pixels  Number of pixels in an inch determine resolution.  Resolution expressed in DPI or dots per inch  Also referred to as PPI or pixels per inch  More pixels or dots per inch equal higher resolution.  When image is scanned then resized, dots become larger. Image becomes grainy or blocky.

Instructional Technology Service Large Format Printing Scanning Images  Minimum DPI for poster images at final size is 150.  When scanning images that will be rescaled, scan at higher dpi.  Final DPI is a factor of final rescale of image.  Image rescaled by 10 X, original must be scanned at 10 X.

Instructional Technology Service Large Format Printing Example: 35 mm slide image to be used on a 48” X 36” size poster. 1 3/8” X 7/8” 8 3/4” 13 3/4” Scan at 1500 dpi Scale 10 X Finished dpi = 150 Original image size
