Communications Now Beyond Presented by Bob Heyl – Penn State University

Communications - Now Beyond Years ago text messaging was the new horizon…..the solution. The problems at Virginia Tech illustrated a lack of ability to communicate.

Communications - Now Beyond Companies sold software to schools to help with their security problems. PASFAA & PHEAA produced a TV show illustrating its uses

Communications - Now Beyond It was going solve our dilemma of how to communicate with students was considered the old “man’s” way of communicating. So…..it was out and many were looking for the newest and the best.

Communications - Now Beyond So what do we have……….??

Communications - Now Beyond Before we look at the many ways we can now communicate, we need to determine what we are communicating. Remember the 5 W’s…….Who, What, When, Where and Why

Communications - Now Beyond What are you trying to communicate? Student Aid Verification document Missing MPN Scholarship applications are due

Communications - Now Beyond What are you trying to communicate? Admissions Application is missing information Scholarship luncheon is Tuesday Deposits are due May 1 st

Communications - Now Beyond Some basic questions Are you looking for actions or providing information? What are the expectations of the receiver? Are they using that system and expecting your message?

Communications - Now Beyond My suggestion……use layering. There is nothing wrong with using several systems to “announce” the same message. Even if the audience reads it several times from the various systems, you have increased your percentage of success.

Communications - Now Beyond Space out the announcement over several days with a different system every day. Use your systems to promote each other

Communications - Now Beyond Things to remember………. I constantly forget that just because they can use an I phone doesn’t mean that they have any idea of how to work an information system. (Example – eLion.)

Communications - Now Beyond Text goes here.

Communications - Now Beyond Things to remember……… How many have access to the system? How many people even know that xxx system actually exists?

Communications - Now Beyond Things to remember…. At what point do people stop adding programs and say this is where I’m at….you need to reach out to me or they just ignore you. Are you trying to connect or provide information?

Communications - Now Beyond So what are some of the systems out there? The old man’s communications tool. Capable of sending a large amount of information and data to a specific user. Able to take the user to pre determined links, keeping the smaller and increasing the amount of information. Links also limit the number of users getting lost

Communications - Now Beyond Text goes here.

Communications - Now Beyond Facebook Create a name that will be meaningful Still the largest and most used Group vs. page or “Like vs. Friend” You can do both A huge tip-off that a Group was slapped together and won’t provide much value to members….. Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.

Communications - Now Beyond Text goes here.

Communications - Now Beyond Twitter Many schools are using it as an effective way to broaden participation in lecture. Classroom shyness is like a black hole: Once silence takes over, it never lets go. Language on Twitter is unique vs. other systems. Very difficult to mix
