THE WAY WE WERE……

WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA? Webster’s defines social media as forms of electronic communication through which uses create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages and other content (such as videos). One of the first social media sites was Geocities created in Today there are many social media sites and methods.

TYPES OF SOCIAL MEDIA Social Networks allow you to connect with other people of similar interests. Some popular sites are Facebook and LinkedIn. Bookmarking sites allow you to save, organize and manage links to various websites. Some popular sites are Delicious and StumbleUpon. Social News sites allow you to upload and share pictures and video. Some popular sites are YouTube, Reddit and Flickr. Microblogging focuses on short updates to subscribers. The most popular site is Twitter. Blog Comments and Forums allow members to hold conversations by posting messages and allowing discussion.

SURVEY SAYS……. NCRA staff prepared and sent a survey to members regarding social media. 959 members responded. Nearly 60% of respondents reported using social media. Over half of respondents stated they relied on NCRA’s electronic communications including social media to keep them informed about NCRA’s activities either “very much” or “ a fair amount”. The top three reasons members use social media in relation to their work: News and information Professional networking Exchange of information with peers

BENEFITS OF SOCIAL MEDIA Professional development Education Networking International exchange of ideas Recruitment and hiring Keeping up to date on the changing world of cancer registry

TOP MEMBER CONCERNS ABOUT USING SOCIAL MEDIA Privacy You may want to consider separating professional from personal profiles. Think before you share (do not post anything you wouldn’t want to see on a billboard). Check out Microsoft’s Safety & Security Center at Accuracy of information NCRA has a social media committee for its social network sites. NCRA leadership and experienced cancer registrars often chime in on posting with questionable information. Trust, but verify information that you plan to use by checking it with standard setters. Ask for the source.

GOALS OF THE NCRA SOCIAL MEDIA COMMITTEE Educate members on the purpose and uses of social media in relation to the profession, including privacy issues. Identify social media opportunities that are relevant to the cancer registry profession. Increase member engagement and use of the NCRA social media networking tools, including (but not limited to) Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
