Panelist at C4DLab National Digital Registry Event Transforming Kenya through the establishment of National Digital Registry

University of Nairobi’s innovation lab, Computing for Development Lab (C4DLab), held a public review of Umoja Kenya, a National Digital Registry service which aims to provide the country with a single source of truth on people, land, establishments and assets.

Unique digital identifier (DID) Mwende Gatabaki, Acting Director Kenya Citizens and Foreign Nationals Management Service, who was the lead speaker during the event noted that successful implementation of the National Digital Registry Service (NDRS) will see the implementation of a digital People Registry which will have Kenyans issued with a unique digital identifier (DID)

Anywhere, anytime public service delivery It will also establish an anywhere, anytime delivery of public service. Additionally, embarking on a digital registry would strengthen national security and reduce crime. It will also enhance efficiency, effectiveness and accountability in service delivery as well as provide citizen-centric services.

Launch of Umoja Kenya Umoja Kenya platform is set to be launched in October 2014 and will be fully operational by December 2015.

Clean, complete and secure National Digital Registry This platform will ensure presence of a clean, complete and secure registry which would curb national issues such as security and effective public service delivery.

Panel Discussion The event concluded with a panel discussing integration of data presently available in different Government institutions and benefits the registry would yield for both private and public organizations.

Panelist Panelists who participated in the discussion included: Chief Executive Officer Higher Educations Loans Board, Charles Ringera, Chief Executive Officer Kenya Bankers Association, Habil Olaka, Dr. Bitange Ndemo, former Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information Communication and Technology and Lecturer at the University of Nairobi, Eunice Kariuki, ICT Authority and Michael Murungi, Google Policy and Government relations in East Africa.

University of Nairobi frequently holds public lectures to facilitate conversations between private sectors, Government and Academia.

E-repository This comes at no better time than this, when the University recently launched Computing for Development Lab (C4DLab) following advocacy by National Science Technology Innovation to establish centers of technology. In line with the digital registry drive, UoN was in July 2014 ranked position 24 in Africa out of 1,306 Universities in e- repository. UoN’s e-repository has availed academic journals, conference papers, projects, theses and dissertations online.

Guest Distinguished guest who graced the occasion include Ambassador Kalemi Mowira Chairperson for Kenya Citizens and foreign Nationals Management Service, Principal CBPS, Prof. B. Aduda, Directors, members of staff and students.
